What is Writing Coaching?

Many graduate students and early-career academics struggle with meeting their writing goals. The additional support of a skilled writing coach can help you break through blocks and create sustainable habits for writing success.

Sessions can include talking through ideas and arguments, planning for structure, co-editing tricky sessions of a chapter, and discussing strategies for moving through common writing obstacles like blank-page anxiety, imposter’s syndrome, or project overwhelm. Each session is tailored to include the support you need most. Interested in learning more? Book an appointment today.

Special Note for Dissertation Editing Clients

You may choose to book an appointment to discuss your project before confirming editing services. However, if you’re ready to proceed, you can choose what level of editing you want (detailed below) and confirm services here.

Levels of Editing

Developmental Editing

The most in-depth editing available. Appropriate for writers seeking support for academic journal publication or dissertation students interested in strengthening their arguments or evidence. Big-picture focus on sound structure, clarity, and cohesion of the writing on the level of ideas and arguments. Generally will include the other levels of editing as well, often in a second pass after one round of developmental edits is completed.

Copyediting & Proofreading

Ensures your work is error-free. Focuses on sentence and paragraph-level editing; addresses issues like grammar, typos and spelling errors, and correcting in-text citation formatting. May include some comments regarding clarity of sentences depending on the status of the draft.

Formatting (APA 7, MLA, etc.)

This level of edits is the most "surface" as it does not include a review of the content itself. Ensures your document matches APA 7 and/or another style guide such as your department's specific parameters. For dissertations, this often includes creating a properly formatted, hyperlinked table of contents, custom margins, inserting different styles of pagination in different sections, and formatting headings, subheadings, tables, and figures.

References & Bibliography

Optional add-on services. One tier for checking the formatting of the citations in your reference pages. An additional tier for writers who struggle with keeping references organized for checking that the titles, authors, publication dates, etc. are correct. Bibliography checks can add significant time. Writers who are confident in their references can skip this level of editing and save significant money.
